The reason for this issue is Intel and their reluctance to support the graphics for linux machines with this GPU. I have tried updating the kernel as recommended to 3.15 and recently tried 3.16, needed clonezilla to recover the machine to a workable state. I had problems with this one getting it to work, see separate thread. KDE is fine, LXDE and mate are even better.

I have a nice little Acer Aspire D270 which runs PClinuxOS nicely with 2GB ram.
